Halloween 2023 Creepfest: 10 Best Haunted House Moments In Anime, Ranked

Spooky times are in the air.

A lot of anime are set in school. A lot of anime that are set in school feature a school festival arc. A lot of school festivals feature haunted houses. And it's October now, so a list of the best anime haunted houses seems like something pretty logical and even much-needed.

The haunted houses are not just good by themselves: the characters who helped create them also add a lot of personality to the whole experience.

10. Ouran High School Host Club (Ouran Koukou Host Club)

 - image 1

One of the most wholesome events in the whole series transpired during Halloween. Haruhi's class is holding a bravery contest, but their class representative is very easily scared, so Haruhi and the twins are trying to help him. Things, of course, don't go as planned, mostly because of the intervention from the rest of the host club, but in the end everything ends well.

9. Code Geass

 - image 2

Lelouche was forced to work at the school festival. If that's not funny already, then the haunted house will be. It's small and devoid of technology, mostly relying on jumpscares from the students in costumes trying to make the others scream. The costumes were quite unorthodox: for example, one of them was a tombstone.

8. Tanaka-Kun Is Always Listless (Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge)

 - image 3

Tanaka-kun is pretty lazy and doesn't want to do much, so when his class is selected to do the haunted house for the school festival, he was selected to be the welcoming ghost, the one that the visitors see first upon entering — because he can sit! And, surprisingly, he does a great job of spooking people just by sitting here with his barely emotional face.

7. Daily Lives Of High School Boys (Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou)

 - image 4

Spite is one of the most powerful motivators, one that fuels rivalry, and this is one of the greatest examples of that trope. The boys decide to create a better haunted house than the girls from the neighboring all-girls school. And they succeed: the atmosphere is eerie, the costumes are gorey, the effect is impeccable. The most scary part, though, was the costume change.

6. My Hero Academia (Boku No Hero Academia)

 - image 5

Sometimes My Hero Academia remembers that it's a show about school kids and lets them participate in the activities that are associated with a school life. One of such activities is a school festival, and while Deku's class 1-A decides to sweep the stage with a heartfelt performance, class 1-C creates a haunted house. And they were very thorough in creating believably horrifying decorations, one of which included Shinso hanging from the ceiling upside down.

5. K-ON!

 - image 6

Sure, the girls in K-On! are planning to perform at their school festival, but they're all from different classes, and one of the classes creates a haunted house — the one where Mio and Tsumugi are in. And the show features a scene where Mio gets scared by Tsumugi, who takes her job at the haunted house very seriously.

4. Lovely Complex

 - image 7

In the beginning of a school festival Koizumi Risa is not feeling great: her love confession was turned into a joke, so her mood now jumps from being heartbroken to being angry. To deal with that, she signs up as the role of a ghost in the haunted house — and she does it expertly, taking her anger out on the visitors. Her sulking makes the experience much more vivid (and funny).

3. The Wallflower (Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge)

 - image 8

The main character of The Wallflower, Nakahara Sunako, is happy to interact with spooky things, so roping her into being a part of the haunted house display wasn't really hard. But it's not only her who makes the whole experience interesting: other characters, the boys that she lives with, believe that she is just being used by her class and decide to help her, donning on various costumes and attracting the audience.

2. From Me To You (Kimi Ni Todoke)

 - image 9

It's not a haunted house that was created for the school festival but a test of courage trail that Kuronuma Sawako helps to make even more spooky. She likes being useful to her classmates, and if her own spookiness can bring people some nice emotions, then she's into that. It happens right in the first episode, and it instantly shows the characters' dynamic and the potential for its growth.

1. My Little Monster (Tonari No Kaibutsu-Kun)

 - image 10

Shizuku, with her cold exterior, is forced to play a ghost — and she's terrible at that. She's not scary at all, just confusing. But the rest of her class tries to do their best: their costumes are fun, and Haru compensates Shizuku's disinterest with his own over-enthusiasm. The fun, however, is short-lived, as Haru's explosive personality sometimes does more harm than good.
