Hot Take: Attack on Titan’s Floch Was One of the Best Characters in the Anime

Just hear us out.

Summary:

  • Floch is one of the most hated characters in Attack on Titan.
  • He’s still very well-written.
  • Floch has a clear motivation and stays true to his ideal until his last moments.

Floch is probably the most hated Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) character. Okay, it might be Gabi, but Floch is definitely among the top 3. While it might be more than deserved, it’s hard to deny that he’s a very interesting person.

Floch is really hated by the fandom

He wasn’t really in the story before Season 3, and it took fans only a few moments to start disliking the character. Floch was too aggressive when it came to the choice between Erwin and Armin, he was rude to Eren after the Shiganshina District Battle, and let’s be honest, he was just annoying most of the time.

But then the Final Season came and the dislike turned into pure hatred. Floch joined the Yeagerists, claimed that Eren was the true savior of Paradis and tried to make the Rumbling happen as much as he could. On top of that, his interference with the Alliance led to Hange’s death, and we’ll never forget that.

That doesn’t mean he’s a bad character

But all of the above is exactly why Floch is such a curious character. He makes fans feel and think, even if it’s hate they feel and “please shut up” is what they think every time Floch is on screen.

Floch stayed true to his motivations and ideals. He believed that the Eldians needed a devil to save them, someone cruel and unforgiving. He didn’t want peace, he wanted war and wished the Eldians to be victorious.

At first Floch thought that Erwin would be this “devil,” but he later understood that Eren was the true hope of his people. And Floch was ready to follow him into the deepest levels of hell. This dedication is admirable!

Moreover, Floch is extremely brave and loyal. He knows what he wants and knows how he wants to achieve that, and there’s nothing that can change his mind. He stayed by Eren’s side until the very moment he died and believed in his savior.

Floch also has all the traits of a great leader. He knows how to make people follow and listen to him, that’s why he became the leader of the Yeagerists.

He was absolutely right about everything. Floch said that if Eren died, Paradis would be destroyed, and that is exactly what happened years after the finale. Floch predicted that.

Fans hate Floch so much because they do not share his values and his opinions, and it is completely justified. Let’s be honest, his ideals were questionable and he was rooting for the Rumbling.

But this is what makes him so interesting and so believable. Floch has clear motivation, he doesn’t hide, he isn’t trying to fool anyone, he has a goal and is moving towards it no matter what it takes.
