How Are Chainsaw Man’s Makima and Nayuta Different?

Reincarnation doesn’t mean you’ll be the same person.

Chainsaw Man manga spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Nayuta is the reincarnation of Makima.
  • Makima treated Denji like a dog.
  • Nayuta genuinely cares for him and sees him as family.

When a Chainsaw Man devil dies, they have the ability to be reincarnated into the world. The only condition is that their name should still be feared by the people, as fear is the origin of the devils in the series.

Since Makima was not only a regular devil, feared by many, but also one of the Four Horsemen, it was obvious that she couldn’t just go like that. She had to be reincarnated. And she does.

Nayuta is the reincarnation of the Control Devil, which used to be Makima. But that doesn’t mean they are the same person.

In Chainsaw Man it’s not the person who gets reincarnated, but the devil itself. We can look at it as the Titan Shifters powers in Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). You can transfer the abilities to another person but cannot transfer the person into another body. Same with Chainsaw Man.

When you think of devils, your first idea is that they are evil. Especially someone like Makima. So you’d expect the new Control Devil to resemble Makima in many ways, or at least have a tendency toward the same behavior. But Nayuta is nothing like that.

Makima was never sincere

Makima treated Denji terribly. She pretended to care about him, gave him a home, food and a job, and tried to fake interest in him, but it was all a clever facade.

In reality, Makima just used Denji as her pawn and treated him like a loyal dog. It was too late when Denji finally realized that, but it helped him to defeat her. He bet on the fact that Makima never really saw Denji and was only interested in the Chainsaw Man. And as it turned out, he was right.

Makima didn’t even remember Denji’s scent, which led to him fooling her and costing Makima her life.

Nayuta, on the other hand, is completely different. Despite forcing the fandom to be cautious about her at first, she proved to be loyal to Denji in the latest chapters of the manga.

Nayuta is the exact opposite of Makima, she doesn’t just see the Chainsaw Man in Denji, she sees his true self. Even when Denji is in his Chainsaw Man form, Nayuta still sees the human in him.

Hearing Denji say that Nayuta will be better off without him absolutely breaks her heart. And she doesn’t want to leave him, no matter what. Nayuta is ready to fight for Denji, since he’s her family now.
