Iruma-kun’s Spin-off Manga Features the Best Teacher Kalego?!

Silence!

Summary:

  • Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is an old school shounen that is also an isekai.
  • If you like Izuku from MHA, you’ll like Iruma. Perhaps even more than Izuku.
  • Kalego is Iruma’s strict teacher (and familiar).
  • His spin-off is about Kalego’s days as a student.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun (Mairimashita! Iruma-kun) is an old school shounen that also doubles as an isekai. In this case, “old school” means that it’s written like a shounen from the late 90s, or early 00s. By “isekai” we mean exactly that — the main character is transported from Earth to another, demonic world. The story features many memorable, wacky characters, one of which — the stern demonic teacher named Naberius Kalego — will soon receive his own spin-off series.

Suzuki Iruma is a boy who had been forced to work for his parents’ benefit for his entire life — until one day, the bastards literally sold him to a literal demon. Luckily for Iruma, said demon’s plans had nothing to do with eating a human child for brunch — rather, he was interested in adopting a grandson, so he could show off to his coworkers. And so, Iruma became the only grandson of Sullivan — a demon noble and the Headmaster of demon school Babyls, to which the boy was instantly enrolled.

Just a few small issues with that arrangement. First, Iruma is the only human in the Demon Realm. Second, these demons are scary, and the school's anthem is about cooking and eating humans. Third, Iruma is a bit TOO kind-hearted, to the point of being a doormat due to his life so far. Luckily, his (kinda witless) charms and many skills he picked up while slaving away for his ex-parents’ profit help him survive and find love interests-uh, we mean “allies” among the students — all while he steadily climbs the demonic ranks through the school year.

If you liked Izuku from My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia), you’ll like Iruma, as he’s basically the same type of protagonist (except, his story is better written).

Demonic Teacher Spin-off

Kalego is a strict, and rather short-tempered demon in charge of Iruma’s class. Also, due to some plot shenanigans and very unfortunate cases in demonic magic circles and contracts, he kind of became Iruma’s familiar (while still remaining a teacher and pointedly ignoring this fact unless he has to do otherwise).

His spin-off manga, however, has very little to do with the human boy himself. Kalego Side Story (Mairimashita! Iruma-kun: Kalego Gaiden) is a prequel to the main story, featuring Kalego during his student days in Babyls. In fact, the first two chapters of this manga were already released in 2021 — and now, Nishi Osamu (the author of Iruma-kun) decided to make another story under this same title.

The new arc of Kalego Side Story will start on December 7th, 2024. There are no known plans for an animated adaptation so far, so if you want to see more of the demonic teacher — be sure to read the manga!
