  • Chad Stahelski reveals that John Wick anime is in the works.
  • The original story focuses on an ex-hitman, dragged back into the world of crime.

John Wick is an American action thriller media franchise that began back in 2014 with the release of a live action movie. The movie became a success pretty quickly and was followed by several sequels and has various spin-offs in development. And one of them seems to be… an anime!

The director of all four movies, Chad Stahelski, reveals his plan to expand the John Wick universe with an anime adaptation. He mentions loving Japanese anime and being a fan of this type of media. Stahelski also adds that anime could achieve certain things better than the movies, and he’s excited to work on the project.

The story focuses on a retired hitman, John Wick, who gets dragged back in the world of crime. After his wife’s demise, he’s stricken with grief, and the only thing he has in memory of her is a little puppy. After a group of Russian gangsters break into John Wick’s apartment, kill his dog, and steal his car, he’s infuriated. Wick seeks vengeance against the people who’ve done it, choosing the path of violence.

Both John Wick and anime fans have met this news with excitement. The movies are well known for their intense violence, stunning action and stylish cinematography, and people are sure that all of these would look incredible in anime format.

There isn’t any particular information about the release date of the project. We don’t know if the series is going to follow the plot of the movies, or if it’s a standalone project with its original story that takes place in the same universe. The cast hasn’t been revealed, either, but fans hope to see Keanu Reeves (the actor playing John Wick in the movies) at least among the English dub voices. There’s also hope that the main character of the anime will visually resemble the actor, but no one knows for sure yet.

The animation studio is also yet to be revealed, but fans have some thoughts (they always do!). Studio Trigger feels like a great choice, and we can see why. The studio has proven themselves worthy while working on an anime adaptation of Cyberpunk, the game where, by the way, one of the main stars was also Keanu Reeves. This would be an awesome coincidence!
