Jojo's Bizarre Musical Reveals Its Menacing Cast

Jojo's Bizarre Musical Reveals Its Menacing Cast

Everyone, do a Jojo pose!

Summary:

  • Jojo the Musical’s trailer has revealed its main cast.
  • There’s a lot of talent put into this production.
  • We don’t know if Part 1 opening will be used. It should be.

Over the years, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken) had plenty of official adaptations. Two animes by APPP and David Production (with the latter being the superior version, of course), a live action adaptation of Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable, multiple video games including Eyes of Heaven, All Star Battle and GioGio’s Bizarre Adventure, semi-official light novels like Jorge Joestar and Purple Haze Feedback — and as we’ve just learned, soon even a musical:

Phantom Blood the Musical

The musical is set to retell the story of Part 1: Phantom Blood. Starting in England, 1868, it tells us about the difficult and tumultuous history between the heir to a noble house and a pure, gentlemanly soul Johnathan Joestar, and his newly adopted brother and sociopathic schemer Dio Brando. In this tragic tale of unrequited brotherly love, vampiric curses and Sun-powered karate, they are set to clash, and kick off the generational vendetta between the Joestar bloodline and Dio’s minions that eventually result in the horrific events of Part 6: Stone Ocean.

Despite its weird premise, Part 1 is probably the most fitting Jojo story to be adapted into a musical. It’s shorter than the other parts, it has no Stands (that are certain to make a theatrical production much more difficult), and no Pillar Men (which are practically required to look like four Mr. Olympia contestants). Also, it’s much more popular and widely known than another good pick — the series of Jojo side stories Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan (Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai).

What to expect?

The trailer shows us the main cast, with Jonathan being played by Yuya Matsushita (Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler musicals) and Shotaro Arisawa (Ban in Nanatsu no Taizai The STAGE - Uragiri no Seikishi-cho). Dio Brando is Mamoru Miyano (Light Yagami in Death Note and Riku in Kingdom Hearts), and everyone’s favorite waifu Robert E.O. Speedwagon is Young Dais (rapper and actor known for his roles in The Outsider and Tokyo Tribe).

The musical is directed by Ney Hasegawa (Under Execution, Under Jailbreak and Opera Black Jack) and written by Tsuneyasu Motoyoshi (director of Boku no Hero Academia The "Ultra" Stage). The music is composed by Dove Attia (Mozart, l'opéra rock and La Légende du roi Arthur). The musical will premiere in 2024, at Tokyo’s Imperial Theater on February 6-28th, Sapporo Cultural Arts Theater on March 26-30th, and Hyogo Performing Arts Center on April 9-14th.

Though of course, there is one question left unanswered so far — it’s whenever this musical adaptation will have its own version of Hiroaki Tominaga’s legendary Part 1 Opening “JoJo ~Sono Chi no Sadame~”. Because Part 1 cannot possibly be the same without it.

Sono Chi no Sadame!
