Live Action Naruto May Not Be Such a Great Idea

Live Action Naruto May Not Be Such a Great Idea

Maybe better not?

Summary:

  • Live action adaptations are widely popular right now.
  • Naruto adaptation is said to be in production.
  • Fans don’t see the need for a live action Naruto project.

With the modern trend of making everything live action, no one is safe: Disney cartoons, video games, anime — everything becomes a live action project. The desire to promote particular series and make the west more interested in them is fairly understandable, but successful examples of such remakes are so rare, that fans don’t feel so excited about the idea of seeing their favorite shows with real actors anymore. Netflix's adaptation of Death Note alone was enough to make you never touch an anime based live action project ever again.

Live action Naruto is in the works?

This time Naruto is on the menu. The rumors about it being in production have been around for ages, and the recent news from Lionsgate proves it once again: the live action project is in the works. Tasha Huo confirms that she’s a scriptwriter for the Naruto movie.

However, fans are not so hyped about the news. First of all, they don’t see the need for an adaptation. The anime series is doing exceptionally well all over the world, and no one cares that Naruto started more than 20 years ago, it’s still immensely popular and loved by millions. For example, Netflix’s live action One Piece series was called “the last chance to bring One Piece to the entire world” by Eiichiro Oda. You may be really puzzled now, since One Piece is an incredibly popular anime, and thousands of people call it an absolute classic. Still, they say it’s not doing so well in the west, as it could have been, so a live action adaptation is a great way to fix that.

But fans don’t think that Naruto is the same. Come on, everyone knows about Naruto. Dattebayo! It doesn’t matter if you’re a devoted anime fan or if you haven’t seen anything except for the biggest titles, you’re bound to know at least a couple of things about Naruto. Fans suggest that Masashi Kishimoto is probably not going to be so involved in a live action project, since his series doesn’t need more popularity, and this will also lead to the low quality of the adaptation.

Besides, we can’t ignore the previous projects. The aforementioned Death Note and One Piece adaptations were completely different, and while One Piece is not so widely criticized by the fans, Death Note was a total mess. So there are concerns about the final result. No one wants to see their favorite anime treated badly.
