MF Ghost's First Season Came to an End but It Seems It Was Just a Warm-up Act

Sorry, but what's wrong with the end?

MF Ghost spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • The first season recently ended, and a sequel has already been announced.
  • There were no important races; all we saw were test runs and a small competition.
  • Episode 12 was abruptly cut short at the point where Kanata's car skidded on a bad road.

There was a lot of anticipation for MF Ghost. No wonder, since it references the popular 90's anime Initial D. The first season recently ended, and a sequel has already been announced for release in 2024, even showing the first teaser. Episode 12 ended on a cliffhanger, so fans are eager to find out what happened to the main character. But while we're waiting, let's take a look at how the first season turned out and why so many people are criticizing it.

The cars are wonderful, but what's wrong with the plot?

Perhaps everyone will agree that the cars in this anime are designed to a high standard. Racing is featured most of the time (almost all of the time), often at the expense of the story. This distinguishes this title from Overtake!, the other fall season novelty about racing. The first major race begins in Episode 4 and ends in 9, towards the anime's end. There are no important events or twists during the race, its only purpose is to introduce the audience to the characters, the protagonist's rivals.

However, there is a general plot. Kanata Livington is an Englishman who moved to Japan after his mother's death. His goal is to find his father. To do this, he decides to participate in MFG races under his own name. Kanata is not new to the sport, he is already a skilled driver whose talents are admired by all the characters. The connection between MF Ghost and Initial D is that Kanata is Takumi Fujiwara’s apprentice.

Just racing and no development

Despite the relatively high ratings, the first season turned out to be raw. Fans were surprised to see so much focus on the races. There was no hero development, the plot almost didn't progress – Kanata hardly advanced in his father's search, and even the main antagonist didn't appear until the end. But we received good exposition — we got to know the main character, his friends and racing rivals, and of course we saw a lot of great cars.

There were no important races either, all we saw were test runs and a small competition. The season ended with the qualifying for the main event, but it wasn't over either — Episode 12 was abruptly cut short at the point where Kanata's car skidded on a bad road. We don't know if something bad happened, and we won't get answers until the next part. Luckily, at the end of the episode, there was a note that the second season will be released in 2024.

The first teaser has already been released. Although it can hardly be called informative — it just shows a Toyota AE86 driving in heavy rain. Maybe this is a hint that Kanata will have to continue qualifying in difficult weather conditions. Hopefully, the second season will show some class, otherwise what was it all for?

Are you looking forward to the second season?
