One Piece and Naruto Are Outdated? Is It Time to Find New Iconic Anime?

What does being iconic even mean?

Summary:

  • Everyone has their own opinion on what an iconic series is.
  • Naruto and One Piece used to be (and still are) this for some fans.
  • There’s a new trend in the industry, and other series are becoming more popular.

What anime do you think of when you hear the word “iconic”? A lot of anime fans will name such series as Naruto and One Piece, some will add JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken) or Bleach, and some think of classics like Death Note or Code Geass.

All these series have the right to be called so due to their immense popularity and huge fanbase. And that’s not baseless at all, these shows have proven their worth multiple times. Come on, when a series lasts for this many episodes, it means someone is watching it. And not just someone, but a lot of people.

The debates and fights over the best anime ever are not something new, fans have been doing it for ages. But we have to admit that there are more popular shows and less popular ones. And while Naruto and One Piece used to be huge, and are still very much present in various anime discussions, the time has come for them to leave the pedestal and leave room for new anime.

Anime trends are changing

There’s a new trend on shorter action-packed anime series. No one has time to watch 1000+ episodes of One Piece. Does it make it a bad show? No, absolutely not, and thousands of people would vouch for that. But it means that the tide is turning, and newer projects are meant to replace the old ones.

Moreover, this change is happening really fast, and only a couple of years ago Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) was one of the biggest series, and everyone was saying that it’s the greatest anime of all time. Since the finale is still pretty fresh, AoT is back for some time, but there’s a high chance that it’s not for long, since people tend to get tired of talking about the same thing over and over again.

Such series as Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man are thriving right now. And it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re better than One Piece or Naruto. They are different and they’re new, and fans truly enjoy them. It’s as simple as that.

It might feel weird to call them anime classics or iconic now since they haven’t been around for long, but we can already see their influence and the way they’re changing the industry. So maybe about ten years from now there will be a new popular series and JJK fans will watch people fight over it and think “you know nothing about greatness, kid.”
