Max acquired the exclusive rights to stream Ghibli movies back in 2020. Now, the deal is being extended — and the timing is very fortunate. After all, people have been waiting for the movie to come out on streaming for a while. They’re finally getting it, along with their other movies — and it will stay on the service for at least a few years.
So are there no other ways to watch it?
Some Ghibli movies used to be on other platforms like Netflix before. That said, the Max deal is what it is — exclusive — and you’d have to have a subscription to watch the movies legally. However, fans are not especially upset about this: the Max subscription is offered as a bonus by many ISPs in the United States.
Outside of the US, though, watching the movie legally might be a challenge. Many countries simply don’t have access to the service, leaving fans no choice but to pirate the movie. However, Max is coming to many new regions in 2024, including most of Europe and South East Asia.
Is it worth it?
Having the Ghibli movies on streaming is nice. That said, Max doesn’t have a huge anime catalog, and many fans wonder if it’s worth paying for the subscription just for Ghibli. Some fans also suspect that the movie wouldn’t look as great if it’s not shown on a big screen.
