Re:Monster Did at Least One Good Thing: Inspired Mushoku Tensei’s Author

Is it even worth being inspired by?

Summary:

  • Re:Monster is a rather controversial series this season.
  • There’s plenty of problematic content in it.
  • The author of Mushoku Tensei mentions that he was inspired by Re:Monster.

Re:Monster is a currently airing anime adaptation of a manga written by Kogitsune Kanekiru and illustrated by Yamaada.

The series follows Goburou, who was reincarnated as a goblin in another world but kept his memories and ability to gain the powers of the creatures he consumes. Basically, the anime is just your typical isekai.

Far From the Best Anime This Season

When the anime started airing, the reviews were mixed. Of course, there were plenty of people who wanted to keep going and saw potential in the series, but there were also enough of those who called it “trash” and moved on to another project.

But no matter how many viewers were unsatisfied with the first episode, Re:Monster is doing pretty well for a seemingly generic isekai. The scores aren’t skyrocketing, but they aren’t sinking either.

Still, some problematic concepts that the series includes cannot be ignored. The main protagonist raises a lot of questions among fans, and themes of sexual abuse are not portrayed in the way they should be.

After only a few episodes, Re:Monster starts to feel like a series written by a horny teenager, and this is something that disappointed the fans tremendously. On top of that, the series is full of boring isekai tropes that everyone is tired of, so the anime might lose even more of its charm.

It Can Be Inspirational, Though

However, even such series like Re:Monster can be inspirational, and the author of Mushoku Tensei, Rifujin na Magonote, is one of the people who can confirm that.

In one of his X (formerly Twitter) posts, he mentions that there wouldn’t be any Mushoku Tensei without Re:Monster, hinting at the fact that this series became an inspiration for his own.

It didn’t take fans long to believe this, as they see some similarities between the series. Both have controversial main characters, both love relying on odd ecchi tropes, both are isekai. The difference is that everyone seems to agree that Mushoku Tensei is a much better story.

Mushoku Tensei does have some problematic content, it’s true, and fans have discussed it at least a hundred times. But it also has an outstanding world and an interesting story that makes you want to keep watching the show.

Re:Monster was not the only thing that inspired Rifujin na Magonote, though. He has previously mentioned such games as the Final Fantasy series and Rance, as well as the Re:Zero novel series among his inspirations. And we can really feel their influence on the series.
