Studio Orange CEO Reflects on the History of CGI Anime and Teases New Project

No, it’s not Trigun Stampede S2.

Summary:

  • Eiji Inotomo, the CEO of Orange, gave an interview where he said that CGI pushes the limits of traditional animation.
  • Land of the Lustrous was the work by the studio that showed that anime can be made in 3D and look good.
  • Orange is working on a new project, which will have a more realistic look.

3D CGI anime have been very controversial among anime fans. It’s easy to understand why: not only does it look radically different from your usual anime style, but poor quality CGI looks downright atrocious.

Still, there are CGI series that are praised for their visuals. There aren’t many of these, though — but there’s one studio out there that consistently makes good-looking CGI anime. That’s studio Orange, and an interview with their CEO lately revealed some insights on the anime industry.

Inotomo’s Views on Anime Production

Producing CGI anime is not easy, according to Eiji Inotomo, the CEO of Orange. It seems that the reception of these is often rather mixed not just in the West, but in Japan, too.

That said, Orange has a pretty good reputation — and the reason for that is Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni). It was the first major work for the studio, and its huge success has shown that anime can be made in 3D and still look very good.

Inotomo views CGI as something that will become more and more prevalent in anime over the years as the technology gets better and better. In a sense, it actually does: CGI allows for certain animation techniques and shots that are practically impossible in normal circumstances.

The most recent project by Studio Orange is Trigun Stampede — and, according to Inotomo, it pushes the limits of CGI animation. Many fans agree that it’s the studio’s best work visually — a fact that is somewhat surprising to Inotomo, because he was worried about the reception of the series.

Any Chances for Trigun or Land of the Lustrous Sequels?

Currently, Orange has Beastars Final Season announced. The first part premieres on Netflix later this year — the anime will be split in two parts. Presumably, the second part will be released in early 2025. This season will finish the Beastars adaptation — but Orange has another project scheduled after it.

Sadly for the fans of Land of the Lustrous and Trigun Stampede, it doesn’t have anything to do with those. These two series aren’t getting sequels anytime soon, but, when the Beastars will be over, Orange will be working on a new anime.

While we still don’t know what said anime is, Inotomo says that it’s unlike anything they’ve done before. It’s going to have historical elements, and the studio will strive for a more realistic look — fans are excited to see how that turns out.
