Sukuna is Always There. How is His Consciousness Connected to Yuji?

Is he always watching?

Jujutsu Kaisen manga spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Since Sukuna has access to Yuji’s memories, it’s fair to say that he’s capable of watching him all the time.
  • Yuji also has some level of access to Sukuna’s memories.
  • Sukuna might be controlling the level of consciousness his victim possesses.

Since the moment Yuji consumed one of Sukuna’s fingers at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, these two have been connected. But how deep is this connection, and can they really watch each other’s lives like a movie?

Yuji and Sukuna share a body, and only one of them can be in control of it at a particular moment. They switch back and forth throughout the series. And this body situation makes fans wonder what the other one of these two is feeling and doing while he’s not in control. Is it something like a backseat driver situation, or can they not see anything that’s happening outside?

Sukuna is a spectator

It’s clear from some of the early manga chapters that Sukuna has access to all of Yuji’s memories. He knows what some of the modern things are (such as a phone or soda, for example), but he has never encountered them himself, so he must have learned about them from Yuji.

The special bonus chapter of the manga that was released during the Shibuya Incident arc also proves that Sukuna plays the role of a spectator. There was a panel of him being bored to death by Yuji’s normal life. We don’t know if he’s watching 100% of the time, because he hardly finds Yuji that interesting, but he definitely has the ability to do so. With an entity this powerful, it makes a lot of sense that Sukuna would be able to witness everything. But what about Yuji?

Yuji’s consciousness might not work like that

It would be fair to assume that he can also see everything that’s happening when Sukuna is in control of his body. However, there are small hints that it might not be entirely true. For example, during the Shibuya Incident events, Yuji regains control, and it takes him some time to realize what has been done. So, an idea is that he might absorb the memories only after the moment he switches back, and he’s incapable of watching everything Sukuna is doing. But that happened after Yuji had been rendered unconscious, so it might have influenced this particular situation.

On top of that, after Sukuna manages to transfer his soul into Megumi’s body, he forces the sorcerer to watch the brutal torture of his sister's body. That leads us to the idea that a person not in control is also capable of witnessing the event happening to the body. However, most of the time Megumi is shown to be asleep inside of Sukuna’s head, so maybe it’s up to Sukuna to decide what level of consciousness his “roommate” might possess.
