The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) fans have been craving some romance between Maomao and Jinshi for a long time now. And there’s solid hope that we’re getting there, but the mere promise of that is not enough, and they want to know more.
What is there between them?
Fans think it’s obvious that Jinshi is into Maomao, there have been multiple clues, so shippers don’t even have any questions about his attraction. Maomao, on the other hand, is a completely different story.
She gives off strong “don’t even touch me” vibes at the beginning of the story, and while we can clearly see that her feelings towards Jinshi are progressing as well, it’s still not enough to claim that she’s in love with the man. So what is the true nature of her feelings?
This is where light novel and manga readers come to our help. However, even they can’t give us the 100% accurate answer.
Does Maomao have feelings for Jinshi?
The thing is that the light novels are narrated from Maomao’s point of view, and she is an extremely unreliable narrator who’s in constant denial about such things as romantic feelings.
On top of that, it would be weird for her to just think about how much she likes Jinshi all the time, so readers suggest focusing on her actions instead of her thoughts.
In Volume 4 of the light novel series there’s a big reveal coming that has something to do with Jinshi. We won’t spoil you much but will just say that Maomao and Jinshi will have to part ways and live in entirely different worlds.
Maomao then decides to experiment on her body and even attempts to cut her own finger off, which is a thing her mother did when she thought she wouldn’t see her love anymore. Fans think it’s a major hint at the fact that Maomao’s feelings towards Jinshi are similar to the love her mom was feeling.
A thing that readers will tell you with confidence is that Maomao does feel something for Jinshi. She can’t admit it and doesn’t think about it openly, but there are definitely hints that you can collect if you’re capable of reading between the lines.
Maomao always cares about Jinshi and she worries if he is getting enough rest and eating properly. We can see how she’s getting more and more comfortable around him, too.
Despite the light novels not having a proper romance between these two, fans have hope that the anime is going to change that a bit. There’s definitely chemistry between these characters, and this pairing has a big number of shippers, so fans believe it’s possible that their prayers will be heard and we’ll have something more romance in the anime.
