‘The Grimm Variations’ Is Out: Dark Take on Well-Known Stories

Old fairy tales, new retelling.

Summary:

  • The Grimm Variations is fully out on Netflix.
  • It’s a new take on the Grimm fairy tales.
  • The series is very dark and surprising.

The Grimm Variations (Grimm Kumikyoku) is a fresh anime series by Wit that aired on Netflix on April 17, 2024. All 6 episodes were released at once, and are already available online.

New Interpretation of Grimm's Fairy Tales

As you might have guessed from the name of the anime, the series is a new take on Grimm's fairy tales. Each episode is a fresh interpretation of a beloved story: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Town Musicians of Bremen, and Pied Piper of Hamelin.

But don’t expect the Disney charm of the Grimm Variations, the anime will stick to the original horrifying vibe of the fairy tales instead of providing a cute and romantic adventure.

The episodes are longer than usual, each about 40 minutes long, so it will take you some more time to finish the series than you might expect. But since Netflix released all the episodes at once, it’s perfect for binge-watching.

The Series Looks and Feels Good

As expected from the Wit Studio, the quality of the project is great. The series’ vibe is just like we thought it would be: sinister and menacing. So get ready to be surprised as these seemingly wholesome stories surprise you with cruelty and insanity.

The Grimm Variations is a visual treat for the eyes and everything you could’ve expected from a series animated by Wit and characters designed by CLAMP. It’s got the right amount of old-school horror vibes and a touch of novelty.

Although many fans haven’t had enough time to finish the entire series for now, they already see great potential in the first couple of episodes. The Grimm Variations will definitely show you the Cinderella you never even thought about before.

The further you get into the series, the more surprises await you, and each new story manages to become even more twisted than the previous one.

It’ll be better if you’ve seen at least a couple of the tales retold in the Grimm Variations. And it’ll be best if you’ve seen them all because this way you’ll have an idea of what the story is supposed to be like and who to root for.

But get ready because the anime will turn your world upside down and make you question the things you already know. That’s why it’s so entertaining to watch when you know where the original story is going.
