Summary:

- The author of the series passed away years ago without finishing her manga.
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies (Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai Shiteita) is an upcoming romantic fantasy anime, scheduled for July 2024. Our beloved studio Bones is working on the adaptation, and that alone is enough to get you at least a little bit hyped.
The title unveils a lot about the plot of the series, but here’s some more. This is a story of an evil organization leader, Mira, attacking Earth and craving for destruction. But a magical girl Mimori stands up to him.
It would have been just a regular confrontation if not for the simple fact that Mira falls in love with Mimori. Fans of the enemies-to-lovers trope, this one's for you.
Key visual
A new visual for the series has been revealed, and it’s everything you would expect from a fantasy romance anime. The characters look outworldly, they are surrounded by magnificent flowers and look absolutely smitten with each other.
A slight blush on Mimori’s cheeks hints at the fact that Mira won’t be the one falling in love. And Mira’s face just says it all: the evil in his heart will be replaced by love.
Why bittersweet?
The most emotional thing about this adaptation, however, is not the drama and romance between the two protagonists, it’s the mangaka’s fate. Cocoa Fujiwara passed away in 2015 without being able to finish her manga.
Fans expect the anime adaptation to give the story a proper conclusion and give readers some closure, and they think that Bones is working on this project out of pure love and passion.
Anime adaptations are often made to promote the manga and increase its sales. But since the author hasn’t been around for years, this can’t be the reason. That’s why the business strategy of The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant is unclear.
Fans are also upset that Cocoa Fujiwara never lived to see her work animated, as they’re confident that Bones will do a great job with the adaptation.
Nevertheless, they’re truly excited about the upcoming anime and the chance to finally see the finale of this wonderful story. They can’t wait for more details about the adaptation, either, and hope that more visuals and a couple of teasers and trailers are on their way.
