Not every weekly anime series should be watched that way.
Nothing beats sitting down after a boring day at school or work and immersing yourself in an episode or two of your favorite comfort anime series. Some shows, however, are made to be watched in one sitting, whether it’s due to a convoluted plot or too many characters.
Here’s our list of anime series to save for the weekend or a day off:
5. Erased (2016)
Erased is a fantasy thriller anime that takes you back in time. The series tells a story about a 20-something who is sent back in the past to prevent certain events that lead to the death of his mother and investigate a series of kidnappings preceding her death. As is the case with most time travel stories, you need to keep a tight grip on the narrative if you want to predict where the story is going. This is much easier to do if you watch all 12 episodes at once.
4. Summer Time Rendering (2022)
This is a hidden gem in the sea of time travel anime. It’s about a young man who returns to his hometown for the funeral of his close childhood friend. Time loop shenanigans ensue. From the start, you’ll have to remember a lot of information, so for those of us with a short attention span, this anime is best watched in a day or two.
3. World Trigger (2014)
Another binge-worthy anime series on the list, World Trigger is a sci-fi action-adventure about a group of trained heroes set to defend Earth from predatory alien invaders called “Neighbors.” Right from the start, the series introduces us to a great variety of characters and packs the tight narrative with action. This one is on the longer side of the spectrum, though: with 3 seasons total, it will take a while to get through, so free up a few weekends.
2. Odd Taxi (2021)
The odd man out on the list, this unconventional anime is set in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals. However, despite their quirky appearance, these characters can be just as cruel as humans. The series is a gripping thriller with a murder mystery plot and at times a film noir atmosphere.
1. Baccano! (2007)
Baccano! is perhaps the best example of an anime that must be binged. Set in the 1930s in Chicago, the series is a wild ride featuring gangsters, heists, alchemy, and more. All the events set up in the beginning will effect how the story unfolds and come together in the middle.
From the start, these anime grab your attention and refuse to let go. Even if a binge wasn’t in your plans for the night, your time will be well spent. If you decide to watch these series episode by episode, grab a pen and paper – you may need them to keep track of what's going on.
