We’re a Little Bit Tired of the Yuri Gag in Spy X Family

Just maybe tone it down a little?

Despite being an anime about spies, intelligence services and assassins, Spy x Family is also famous for being a comedy series. Moreover, family and humor are probably the first things that come to your mind when you think about this anime (after cute little Anya, of course!). While Spy x Family has a lot of cuteness and clever gags, there’s one that doesn’t really seem that amusing anymore. Or maybe even never did.

What’s up with Yuri?

Yuri was introduced as Yor’s brother back in Season 1, and his appearance was rather weird. It was quirky, just like everything and everyone else in the series, but there’s one detail that made him stand out, and not in a positive way: his obsession with Yor.

It’s fair to say that a lot about Yuri does fit the theme of Spy x Family, indeed. It’s an anime about family bonds after all, which explores these bonds in a funny and satiric way. Yuri is a State Security Service agent, and he keeps his true identity a secret from his own sister to protect her. And that’s amazing! It creates another parallel with Loid and Yor, who also hide the truth from the ones they care about.

Yuri’s introduction felt just like Spy x Family: he’s irritable, quick-tempered and scary, but he cares a lot about Yor, so he keeps this side of him to himself. But then we learn that his love for Yor is not just a simple sibling affection, it’s much deeper and problematic.

Yor is Yuri’s entire world, he is obsessed with his sister. It might have begun when they were little, since their mother died and Yor became sort of a mother figure for Yuri, but it turned into something even more than that. He’s over affectionate towards Yor, he keeps her pictures in his locker, and the mere idea of Yor being unhappy brings him great distress.

The joke ruins the vibe

This has become a running gag of the series, and fans are getting tired of that. They don’t think the joke is funny anymore, and they can’t help but find it uncomfortable and problematic. On top of that, Yuri’s character has great potential, and this gag just ruins it and spoils the vibe.

However, one of the recent manga chapters addresses it, and another character calls Yuri out on this. So portraying Yuri like that was definitely intentional. While it may be very cruel, there’s also a chance that this decision just provides space for future character development. And we hope that this will be the case with Yuri.
