Is it another example of “the manga was better”?
Summary:
- Chained Soldier anime adaptation isn’t going as well as expected.
- Manga readers are upset with the censorship.
- They think the studio chose the wrong marketing strategy.
The Chained Soldier (Mato Seihei no Slave) anime adaptation announcement got fans super excited back in the day because seeing another manga by the author of Akame ga Kill get animated is something we all want, right? As it turns out, wrong.
Chained Soldier has been criticized for a lot of things, which is the fate of many ecchi series. Sexualization, lack of depth, explicit scenes ― all of that left viewers feeling unsure about the anime.
However, manga readers say that these are not the issues with the adaptation, and the worst thing that happened to it is censorship. The Chained Soldier anime is not too sexual; it’s not sexual enough, and that is the problem.
Everyone loses
There are two camps of viewers: one didn’t really know what to expect from the series and was disgusted by all the sexual rewards, and one that knew exactly what to expect and was upset by the censorship of said rewards. The bottom line: everyone is pretty unhappy.
It’s no secret that the series targets a mature audience, the ecchi genre is right there. That’s why it’s so puzzling for manga readers to see some of the rewards cut out of the series, and some censored. They see no point in trying to adapt Chained Soldier at all without properly showing what the series is like.
If Seven Arcs studio was afraid of showing explicit things in the anime, why would they decide to adapt this manga in the first place? And if they were ready for that, why would they censor so many things? Fans just can’t understand it.
Poor marketing
One of the ideas is that the Chained Soldier anime was made for the sake of promoting the manga, as it often happens with anime adaptations, and it’s very disappointing to them.
The marketing strategy is also questionable, and fans even make fun of the fact that the studio decided to market the characters’ music before anything else.
It seems that the studio is trying to fix their mistakes as they decided to release a promotional video with the rewards to attract more fans with the ecchi side of the series, but fans are worried that it’s a bit too late for that.
Fans agree that the potential was there, and the first episodes of the series were promising, since it was still unclear whether the anime would be censored or not. But right now it just makes them sad because the adaptation feels like wasted potential.
