One thing is clear: they all suffered a lot.
Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is notorious for hurting its characters and forcing them to experience some hardcore trauma. While this is actually one of the reasons why we love the series, we can’t help but feel sorry for all of these poor souls that were unlucky enough to become AoT characters.
Now that the finale of the series is out and their stories are over, fans decided to remember some of Attack on Titan character’s journeys and decide what were the most horrible things that happened to them.
- Eren
Although him receiving the Attack Titan and becoming a Shifter was the core of the series and one of the most crucial points in the story, fans agree that it’s also the worst thing that happened to Eren.
The Attack Titan gave Eren a glimpse of the future, ruined his mental state, turned the boy into a mess and a mass murderer, and was the reason for the death of his parents. And still, it had to happen for us to have the Attack on Titan we all love so much.
- Mikasa
Mikasa is a strong warrior and she doesn’t care much about anything but her friends (Eren specifically), so it’s difficult to hurt her, but the finale of the series managed to do that.
The worst thing that happened to Mikasa in Attack on Titan was losing her family, while she was watching, and the finale just did that again by taking away the closest thing she had to family: Eren.

We don’t know how Historia managed to grow up into a decent human being with parents like that, but we guess she’s just extra strong.
Yes, you’ve guessed it right, the most terrible thing that happened to the girl was her parents, one of whom hated her guts, while the other tried to manipulate her into becoming a Titan Shifter.
- Levi
Even though Levi keeps suffering each season, fans think the cruelest thing that happened to him was watching his mother die. And not just seeing the moment of death itself, no.
Levi was a little kid, starving and having no one. And he was forced to sit in the room with the corpse of his mother, helpless and powerless. No wonder he has issues.
- Erwin
The cruelest thing was killing him off minutes before his dream would have come true, but fans still think it wasn’t the worst thing that happened to him.
Erwin’s curiosity and actions indirectly led to his father’s death, and this is where his dream originated from. And who knows, maybe he wouldn’t have died like that if it had never happened. After all, no dream ― no reason to explore the world and fight.
- Hange
This one is the easiest. The worst thing that happened to Hange was her death.
It feels like the story was kindest to Hange. Compared to other characters, of course, because she also suffered enough. But her death was absolutely horrifying. Hange had to fight Colossus Titans all by herself before she burned to death and was stamped on by the same titans.
- Zeke
Zeke’s upbringing is what made him this person, and it’s the roughest thing that happened to him, too. His parents didn’t really care much about him and saw Zeke as a weapon they could use for their plans.
Zeke was neglected and paid very little attention to, which made him do horrible things and wish to end the Eldians when he grew up.
- Grisha
But don’t worry, Eren avenged Zeke in full and made their father suffer even more than Zeke ever did because of Grisha’s neglect.
Fans think that the worst thing that happened to Grisha was Eren manipulating the man to kill an entire family, not sparing even the little kids. On top of that, this event also caused the genocide that Eren would commit in the future, so Grisha will be forever guilty of that.
- Founder Ymir
Ymir is the girl from whom the Titan Curse originated, and this is already a burden. But it wasn’t the thing that made her suffer the most.
Ymir was forced to be a slave to a person who abused and used her for 2,000 years. And it doesn’t even matter that she actually loved him: these years were an absolute torture for her.
All the aforementioned things are unsettling, that’s for sure, but we all know that there’s one more thing that happened to all of the characters, and may also be considered the worst one. And this is… Hajime Isayama.
Fans joke that he is the true villain of the story and he’s the one who made all of his characters suffer this much.
They have a point, of course, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy the pain and tears Isayama brought us. And we’ll be forever grateful for all these unforgettable emotions.
