Youjo Senki II Ends Tonight, and It Was Not Directed by the Man Everyone Credits

Youjo Senki II ends tonight with episode 12, 「出口」, on TOKYO MX at 23:30. The first season finished on 31 March 2017. The gap is nine and a half years, and almost every English database describing the season that just ran has the wrong name in the director's slot.

One seat changed, and it is the one everyone carried forward

Everything below the director carried over from 2017. The director did not. Season one and the 2019 film were both directed by 上村泰 (Yutaka Uemura), and he is not credited on season two at all.

A warning if you are checking this yourself: at least one film database's automatic romanisation renders 上村泰 as "Yasushi Kamimura," which is wrong on both halves of the name.

Twelve episodes, thirteen weeks — and the same was true in 2017

Season two began on 8 July 2026 and ran weekly without a break: 8, 15, 22 and 29 July, 5, 12, 19 and 26 August, 2, 9, 16 and 23 September. Twelve.

Season one looks like it should not work — 6 January to 31 March 2017 is thirteen weeks for twelve numbered episodes — and it does, because a recap episode, 総集編 6.5話 「戦況報告」, went out mid-run. Anyone subtracting dates to get an episode count will come up one short.

The home video release confirms the shape: three volumes, four episodes each, the first on 27 November 2026 and the last on 27 January 2027.

The wait was five years from the announcement, not nine

The nine-year figure everyone is using measures from the end of season one. The production was announced on 19 June 2021, during a streaming special celebrating the franchise, which makes the gap between "season two is happening" and season two happening five years and three weeks.

That is the more interesting number, and it is the one that never appears.

The film's yen figure, with its metric attached

The 2019 feature, 劇場版 幼女戦記, opened on 8 February 2019, ran 101 minutes, was directed by Uemura and animated by NUT.

• 興行収入 (box office gross) over ¥300 million as of mid-March 2019, reported by the publisher's own outlet.
• ¥400 million crossed in late April 2019, announced by the official account.
• ¥420 million as a final figure — that is ¥4.2億 — sourced to a single line in a trade annual's industry statistics issue. It is the number in circulation and it rests on one citation.

¥4.2億 is ¥420 million, not ¥4.2 billion. That distinction survives roughly half the trips through automatic translation, which is why any English figure for this film is worth re-checking before you print it.

Where it actually aired, which is five different times

The broadcast schedule is the sort of thing that produces two different premiere dates in English listings, because Japanese late-night slots run past midnight and keep the previous day's date:

• AT-X — Wednesdays 21:30
• TOKYO MX — Wednesdays 23:30
• Sun TV — Wednesdays 25:00, which is 1:00 on Thursday morning
• KBS Kyoto, BS11, TV Aichi — Wednesdays 25:30, i.e. 1:30 Thursday
• Streaming — Wednesdays 23:00, ahead of terrestrial

Three of those five are technically Thursday. Every one of them is listed under Wednesday.

NUT has made this and almost nothing else

The studio was founded in 2015 and Youjo Senki is the property it is known for — season one in 2017, the film in 2019, season two in 2026. Three productions, one franchise, across nine years, with the core staff block intact apart from the chair at the top.

Which makes the director change the only real personnel story here, and it is the one detail the English-language record has backwards.

Open questions after tonight

• Whether a third season or a second film is announced at the end of the episode. Nothing has been trailed.
• Whether season two ran an extra recap the way season one did. The three-volume disc split covering episodes 1 to 12 suggests not.
• The film's final gross, which nobody has confirmed against the publisher.

A war story that took longer to greenlight than to fight

The series is about an office worker reincarnated into a European war as a small girl with an artillery officer's temperament, and it has now spent longer in the gap between seasons than the fictional conflict lasted.

Tonight it ends with an episode called "Exit," which is either a promise or a title, and the credits will roll on a different director from the one the internet thinks made it.
