12 Times Anime Protagonist Was the Most Interesting Character in Series

Not just main, but also the best.

There are so many outstanding anime characters that it would take forever to just name them all. But the thing with popular characters is, they’re not always the main protagonists of a series.

Take for example Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gojo, who is a regular in all “Fan favorite anime characters” tops but is just the main protagonist’s teacher.

However, it’s not always like that, and we’d like to discuss some characters who are extremely good at being both the main character and the best.

  1. Code Geass

Not only is Lelouch the most intricate character in the series, he’s also considered one of the best anime characters ever, and it’s completely deserved.

Lelouch’s intelligence is truly something else. He has an incredibly interesting personality that makes you want to follow him with your eyes and mouth wide open. Lelouch’s tactical and cold mind can send shivers down your spine.

  1. Death Note

L fans might disagree, but we’ll stand by it: Light is the best character in the series. You don’t even have to support him or agree with him, but you have to admit that watching his schemes and plans is one of the greatest entertainments in the world. No wonder he could charm any girl.

  1. One Punch Man

Although there’s nothing extraordinary about Saitama at first glance, it would be wrong to think that he’s uninteresting. On the contrary, he’s one of the main things that make the series so entertaining.

Saitama’s indifference and quirky behavior make you fall for him from the very first episode, and you just know that watching him will be an experience that shouldn’t be missed.

  1. The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Everyone loves Maomao, that’s just a fact. We don’t know how this girl manages to be so smart, cold and stoic, but kind and charming at the same time. Maomao just can do it all, huh?

It’s obvious that she has some issues, but they make her even more appealing and interesting. There’s no one else like her in the series.

  1. Attack on Titan

Some might argue that Levi and Mikasa are the best characters in the series, but we disagree: Eren is. And not just in the Final Season of the anime, but in all of them.

Eren has so much personality and complexity that discussing it all would turn this piece into a 50-page essay. His character development was the best in the series, without a doubt. Eren feels like a real person who’s lost and broken and suffered enough, and he was the perfect choice for the main protagonist.

  1. Gintama

Gintoki is the true heart of the series. Don’t get us wrong, there are plenty of great and compelling characters in Gintama, but no one can beat the protagonist, he’s that good.

There’s just so much about him: he might be lazy and cowardly, but then kind and caring. His somewhat childish personality adds so much humor and charm to the series, you cannot even imagine.

  1. One Piece

There are a lot of wonderful characters in One Piece, but there’s a reason why Luffy has always been a fan favorite. He dominates various One Piece popularity polls, and fans just love him for his childlike but outstanding personality.

We can’t even imagine One Piece being led by anyone else in the story because Luffy is the true king of the series.

  1. Re:Zero

Re:Zero’s characters are exceptionally well-written, but Subaru is the best example of that. We absolutely see how he can come off as unlikable, but he deserves much more appreciation than he’s getting.

Subaru’s character captures the highs and lows of a human perfectly, you can always feel the emotions behind his actions, and you want to cheer him for them or feel appalled.

  1. Gushing Over Magical Girls (Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete)

Watching Utena turn from a shy and introverted simple magical girl fan into a proper villain for them has been one of the best types of entertainment in 2024. The more we see of her, the more we understand her and her intricate personality.

There are so many sides to Utena, and each one surprises you more than the previous one.

  1. Violet Evergarden

This anime is very character-focused, that's why having a strong lead was a must, and Violet Evergarden succeeded at that.

Violet and her heartbreaking story drive the plot and make it what it is. It was a great pleasure to watch her transformation from a mindless doll that does as she commands to a person who can make her own decisions and decide her own destiny.

  1. Undead Unluck

Even though Fuuko starts out as a rather underwhelming character and a typical shounen girl, she undergoes such a great development that you aren’t even sure whether you’re following the same girl anymore.

It’s unbelievable how much stronger and more mature she gets throughout the series, and the best part is that she just keeps getting better.

  1. Steins;Gate

Who could be better than a mad scientist? That’s right, no one, that’s why Okabe is so great.

He might be a bit over-the-top and too eccentric at times, but this is just part of his charm. Okabe has a lot of flaws, but all of them make him so alive and so interesting that you just can’t wait to see where the story will bring him next.
