AnimeJapan 2024 Highlights: What Are Fans Excited About?

We’ve got a lot of news.

Summary:

  • AnimeJapan 2024 has revealed a lot of information on upcoming anime projects.
  • We’ve got multiple sequel announcements and air date confirmations.
  • We also had new information on non-sequel anime, such as the Spice and Wolf remake.

On the weekend of March 23 and 24, we’ve got AnimeJapan 2024 — one of the biggest exhibits where anime studios and producers reveal new information about anime series.

As such, we’ve got many trailers, key visuals, and other information about upcoming anime projects. There are so many of them it is easy to miss some — here are some highlights from the event.

News on the sequels

The most notable thing is the amount of sequels we’re getting. There will be new seasons for anime like Sasaki and Peeps (Sasaki to Pii-chan) and Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist). The second is particularly surprising — not only did fans get the third season after years of inactivity, but suddenly, the studio wants to continue the anime even further.

Speaking of sequels, there have been many announcements regarding the already announced continuations. We finally have the release date for Oshi no Ko Season 2 — July 2024. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, the Monogatari series, and Beastars all have revealed new trailers for the anime.

Season 2 for SAO Alternative is coming out in October. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) has also revealed information — including the PV, air date, and staff changes.

For sequels that are coming out next season, My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) revealed trailers with songs — opening theme for MHA and ending theme for Mushoku. The new PV for Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) features both the OP and the ED.

There has also been a mention of an announcement for Undead Unluck. While the actual announcement is only coming up on August 1, fans believe it is going to be about the second season of the anime.

New information on existing series

It wasn’t all about sequels only, though. Many previously announced projects have also released news. Suicide Squad Isekai has been announced to premiere in July and revealed a third PV. Re:Monster — one of the upcoming isekai series from the Spring season — has also released a new trailer.

The previous rumors about the Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) remake being 2 continuous cours long turned out to be true. The series also revealed a new key visual.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword (Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria), which is scheduled to air in July, hasn’t had a new PV, but revealed a new key visual. We’ve also got the air date (July 2024) for the latest P.A. Works original anime project, Nanare Hananare.
