Can We Expect New Season for Made in Abyss Anytime Soon?

Can We Expect New Season for Made in Abyss Anytime Soon?

What is there left to adapt?

Summary:

  • We haven’t got any announcements regarding another sequel to Made in Abyss in a while.
  • There isn’t enough content in the manga even for a movie.
  • We definitely won’t get another season anytime soon.

Made in Abyss is one of the most unique takes on fantasy in anime. It has an exceptionally well-written world which made many fall in love with it. Yet despite that, the anime is extremely controversial due to the amount of gore and violence in it.

Initially, the first season came out in 2017. The movie sequel, Dawn of the Deep Soul, came out in 2020, and the second season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, aired in 2022.

Season 2 didn’t fully adapt the major story arc, however, and another sequel for it was immediately announced — however, we still have no news on it.

No news for a while

While it’s uncommon for an anime project — especially for a big one like Made in Abyss — to receive no news for such a long time, it’s not the only time this happened.

One Punch Man Season 3 didn’t even have a studio or date announced until this year, and Beastars Season 3 suffered from a similar issue (until it finally got an announcement recently).

There’s not enough content

There’s definitely enough content in the manga for another season of Made in Abyss right now. While The Golden City of the Scorching Sun isn’t an official arc name — it’s split into multiple sub-arcs like the Iruburu arc (which was covered by the anime) — it’s still largely the same continuous plotline.

In fact, if you look at the chapters of the manga (which is still ongoing), the anime nearly caught up to it at the end of S2. The situation is even worse than you might think: as of now, there are only 7 chapters not adapted by the anime — not even enough for a movie, let alone another TV season.

This makes fans wonder why a sequel for Made in Abyss S2 was even announced, when the manga clearly didn’t have enough content.

The truth we don’t know, sadly — but fans speculate that studio Kinema Citrus plans to adapt the manga entirely regardless of how long it is, and preemptively announced a sequel to the anime despite not having enough content for a full season.

In fact, the announced sequel for Made in Abyss isn’t even confirmed to be a TV series. It is as likely to be another movie, which might further kill the momentum of the anime, as movies take a long time to get to the mainstream audience.

Probably no new season in the near future

With how irregularly the manga chapters for Made in Abyss come out, it’s hard to guess when the anime will have enough content to adapt. We don’t even know if it will be a series or a movie, and there’s a chance the studio won’t start working on the anime immediately.

Sad news for Made in Abyss fans, but they shouldn’t expect another season of the anime anytime soon.
