You just have to try this anime out if you’re a fan of the game.
Summary:
- Delicious in Dungeon is often compared to Dungeons & Dragons.
- Both are outstanding fantasy adventures.
- The game and the anime have the same vibe.
Everyone and their mother has already talked about how Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) has some sort of connection to Dungeons & Dragons. Even their acronyms are practically the same (DnD and DiD), which was definitely done intentionally.
But why do we keep hearing about this connection?
Well-Done Fantasy Experiences
This may seem like the most obvious thing in the world, but Delicious in Dungeon and Dungeons & Dragons are indeed two wonderful examples of the fantasy genre.
Their characters embark upon adventures within similar fantasy settings, they both include dungeons and their masters, there are typical fantasy creatures such as ogres and dragons.
Basically, if someone told you that Delicious in Dungeon and Dungeons & Dragons were set in the same universe, it wouldn’t be difficult to believe that. The anime reminds you of the exciting DnD world in the best possible way.
The only difference is that the anime tells its story that viewers cannot affect in any way, while the game provides players with a chance to create their own stories.
Similar Character Mechanics
If it’s not your first time dealing with adventure fantasy, you know that a skilled team is needed to overcome various obstacles in a dungeon. And both Delicious in Dungeon and Dungeons & Dragons know that well, too.
In DnD, you can create a diverse team with members responsible for various aspects of the game. Of course, you need a damage dealer to handle difficult opponents, you need a healer or a shield user in case things go wrong, mages always come in handy, and having a strategist in your party can sometimes be an instant win.
Laios’ party in Delicious in Dungeon is a wonderful example of that. Each member is responsible for one thing they do best, and by combining their abilities they become practically unbeatable.
Laios knows his way around monsters, he’s a pretty decent fighter. Chilchuck can deal with any trap on the team’s way, Marcille is a strong mage, and Senshi knows everything about the dungeon, which saved the party on multiple occasions.
There’s Always Time for Humor
Comedy is another strong part of both DnD and DiD. In the game, players are usually the ones who create warm and funny moments. If you’re a gamer, you’ve surely had some absolutely hilarious evenings playing DnD with your friends.
And Delicious in Dungeon creates the same atmosphere with its humor. Sometimes you don’t even feel like you’re watching an anime. You feel like you’re on an exciting and humorous adventure with your friends.
With the MyAnimeList score of 8.07, Delicious in Dungeon is going strong. New episodes come out on Thursdays at 22:30 (JST) on Netflix. As of now, 17 episodes of the series are out, and Episode 18 will be released on May 2, 2024.
