When humans are not enough.
Gods have always been pretty fascinating creatures in all types of media. Whether they are portrayed as ruthless dark superior beings, caring helpers or detached observers, there's always something compelling about them. So let's take a look at five anime that feature these creatures.
Death Note
Such an obvious but yet impossible to skip example. This anime explores a story of a brilliant student, Light, who finds a mysterious death note, dropped by a shinigami (a god of death), Ryuk. Now the main protagonist is trying to clear the world from dangerous criminals and become the god of the new world, void of the ones he doesn't deem worthy.
Noragami
Hiyori used to be a normal girl until an accident causes her soul to slip out of her body. This becomes a recurring event for the girl, which makes her learn about the existence of another world where dark creatures exist. All of that leads to her meeting a minor deity, Yato, who's a self-proclaimed god trying to earn some money.
Record of Ragnarok (Shuumatsu no Walküre)
The gods of the world hold a gathering every 1000 years to decide the fate of humankind. This time their decision is not so kind: disappointed by human behavior and repulsed by their sins, the gods choose to end humanity. However, the Valkyries intervene and propose a way for humanity to prove it's not so hopeless. The Ragnarok tournament is the last chance for people to show their worth and deserve their survival.
Higurashi When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)
Keiichi Maebara moves to the village of Hinamizawa and makes some new friends. Their seemingly peaceful life is clouded by a dark turn of events. The village holds an annual festival, which is accompanied by a series of mystical and grim incidents. The main protagonist is about to learn the truth about this mystery and uncover some dark secrets, which lead him to the origin of the festival and the local god it is dedicated to.
Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita)
Nanami Momozono is a school student whose life hasn't been perfect recently. One of her main problems is being homeless so when a mysterious man offers her a place to live after she saves him from a dog, she agrees. Turns out the man used to be the Land God, and his home is nothing less than a shrine. He gives the girl his powers and the opportunity to be the new god.
