How Many Episodes Will Spice and Wolf Remake Be? (the Answer Is Not So Simple)

Well, it will probably at least get to Volume 4 of the LN.

Summary:

  • Fans are wondering how long the Spice and Wolf remake is going to be.
  • The two volumes per cour pacing of the original series was perfect, and fans hope it will return.
  • The anime will probably get more than one season, but it’s too early to guess.

Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) is getting a remake, which has been a source of speculation for a while. It’s understandable: a remake of a beloved classic isn’t something people are going to easily accept. It will be compared to the original series, of course.

The fact that we currently don’t have any information on the key staff outside of the initially revealed details is really worrying the fans. After all, this can be a dealbreaker when it comes to the quality of the remake. What is also important is how long it is going to be — and fans actually have some guesses on that.

It needs to at least adapt Vol.4 of the LN

First of all, a remake of Spice and Wolf obviously indicates it is not continuing from where the first adaptation stopped. That is because it wouldn’t be possible anyway: the first anime skipped a light novel volume that was relevant later on.

The skipped volume, Volume 4, is presumably going to be included in the new anime — if the remake doesn’t even get to that point, then there’s no reason to air it at all.

The common consensus is that the new anime is going to at least cover as much content as the original one — so at least four volumes of the light novel. That, however, doesn’t answer the question of how long it is going to be: after all, the pacing can be completely different.

What about the pacing?

The first anime adapted two volumes of LN per season. Today, that would be considered a rather slow pace for light novel adaptations: usually, they adapt from 3 to 5 volumes per cour (although 5 is definitely too much).

However, Spice and Wolf is very dialog-heavy, and adapting it at the pace of 2 volumes per season would actually be perfect.

It’s not unlikely that the anime will stick to the same pace as the original adaptation. Studio Passione adapted one volume of Ishura light novels into a whole cour of anime in Winter 2024 — an even slower pace (although Ishura is so dense you can’t really cut it). That, however, will mean that the first season will largely repeat the events of the first adaptation.

This would also mean that the anime would need multiple seasons to actually get to the promised skipped content. Some fans even speculate that the new anime is going to fully adapt the light novels. That sounds dubious, however, as they’re still being published — and there are already 24 volumes out
