Vinland Saga Season 2 Wins IGN’s Best Anime 2023 — Deserved or Not?

Vinland Saga Season 2 Wins IGN’s Best Anime 2023 — Deserved or Not?

Or is it the biggest surprise of the year?

Summary:

  • Vinland Saga wins Best Anime 2023 at IGN.
  • It’s the most surprising series of the year due to its complete change of pace.
  • Fans think that it’s a good choice for the best anime of the year.

This year’s been a great ride if we’re speaking about anime. New season of Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) Final Chapters, Jujutsu Kaisen, Mob Psycho 100, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Pluto. There has been no time to get bored! And choosing the best one of these series is not an easy task, but IGN tried, and chose… Vinland Saga Season 2.

Best anime of the year?

IGN calls the Vinland Saga sequel the most surprising anime this year, despite the fact it took a lot of risks. And they might be just right. Season 2 of Vinland Saga is completely different from the first one. Fans have been arguing whether that’s a good or a bad thing for ages, and most agree that all the changes made the series much more enjoyable.

Season 1 was an action-filled revenge story, while Season 2 was more of a philosophical journey of two completely different men trying to deal with past traumas. The sequel made Vinland Saga stand out among other anime due to its heavy writing. Thorfinn’s character development alone has made such a big difference for the series that it just has to be mentioned.

Do you agree that Vinland Saga Season 2 is the best anime of 2023?

Fans’ reception

A lot of fans, surprisingly, agree.

“Seeing two completely straight men on a farm doing normal things like sowing wheat was the best entertainment I've had,” a fan says.

Vinland Saga really showed another side of itself this year, and many found that truly enjoyable. It’s a slow burn but it’s filled with exceptional character moments. However, not everyone agrees, of course.

Such huge series as Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen or Pluto were also in contention. Chainsaw Man was also there, although it was released last year, but it was still ongoing at the end of 2022, which is why it couldn’t compete with last year’s anime. Demon Slayer wasn’t even mentioned on the list of contenders, which is, quite frankly, weird. And we do know that these are all series that have a huge fanbase, confident that their anime is the best one. And not only this year, but ever.

Still, Vinland Saga won the hearts of IGN, and we can understand why. No matter what your opinion on this decision is, other opinions are allowed to be different. But we’d love to hear your thoughts on the best series of 2023!
