Guide to MAPPA's Upcoming Projects and Sequels: What to Expect?

We still don’t know when the Chainsaw Man movie is coming out.

Summary:

  • MAPPA has so many projects announced, it’s easy to get confused by them.
  • They’re producing sequels for CSM, JJK, and Jigokuraku — but none of these have dates announced.
  • They’re making multiple new anime as well.

MAPPA is the most talked-about anime studio at this point. The discussions are not always positive, however: many fans are critical of their treatment of animators and the studio picking up too many projects at once.

Still, MAPPA is involved with so many highly popular anime that it’s really hard to ignore them. In fact, the studio has so many anime announced that it is easy to get lost in them. If you want to figure out what exactly they’re doing right now, you can check out this guide.

MAPPA is working on multiple sequels at once

Of course, most people probably care about MAPPA’s sequels to popular franchises. Their biggest hit is undoubtedly Jujutsu Kaisen, and they have announced an adaptation of The Culling Game.

That said, we don’t even know if it will be a TV series or a movie — but everyone assumes a TV season, since it is more suitable for the arc. There is currently no date or anything.

Similarly, there’s Chainsaw Man Reze movie, adapting one of the most beloved arcs of the manga. Fans were expecting more news about it during AnimeJapan 2024, but they got none — and the movie is presumably not coming out until 2025.

The second season for Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku) has also been announced, yet again, it doesn’t have a date. Neither does Dorohedoro Season 2, which isn’t even confirmed to be by MAPPA — but most fans assume it will be just like Season 1 was.

There’s also another sequel MAPPA has been working on — one that was announced roughly half a decade ago. Yuri!!! on Ice The Movie: Ice Adolescence seems to be stuck in production hell, and the release date has been moved multiple times — currently, we don’t have one.

Non-sequel projects

Of course, MAPPA is also working on non-sequel projects. In the Spring 2024 season, they will adapt Oblivion Battery (Boukyaku Battery), a baseball manga that they already made a special for in 2020.

Another MAPPA project that was announced a long time ago is Lazarus. An original anime by Shinichirou Watanabe — the person behind Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo — with animation by one of the biggest studios in the industry today sounds like an exciting project. It’s sponsored by Adult Swim, and we’ve had a PV already — but there has been no news since July 2023.

The most recent MAPPA announcement — and the most controversial — has been Zenshu, an anime about struggles of an anime director. While normally, industry-related works excite otaku, this one has been criticized for being a tone-deaf project, considering MAPPA’s own treatment of workers
